I spent an afternoon this past week with Frank Quitely. I peeked behind the curtain. I saw Superman and X-Men and American Virgin. I was told the secrets of Photoshop and colouring and inking. It all seemed so obviously beautiful. A child could do it. A CHILD COULD DO IT!

…and then I re-entered the real world. And Spock had to talk me through the procedure. And my life will never be the same.

I called up Takeshi Miyazawa last week and had a chat about his career in comics. He’s currently working for Marvel Comics drawing the title, ‘Spider-Man loves Mary Jane’ but his true passion lies in his web-comic, ‘BFX’. He and Arthur Dela Cruz are well into the second arc of the series, introducing new characters and a new story format. Here’s what it’s about (in a blurb pilfered from Tak’s site):

Living and working in the dirty underbelly of the mega city Metropia, Beth and her party of urban couriers live out their days under the thumb of their clients. Their routine lives take a turn for the worst after a life-altering incident involving local metaphine traffickers, guns and killing, occurs.

Events continue to spiral out of control as Beth and her party desperately fight back to stay alive while, at the same time, finding themselves sinking deeper and deeper into the murky depths or metropia’s shadows.

Will they ever see light again?

It seems the HorCast is pushing for a Tuesday publication date every week. Does it abuse alcohol on the weekends? Stay up too late? Is it unable to consume enough coffee to jolt the bags from under its eyes every Monday? Who’s to say. All I can tell you is that it’s still asleep as I type this, and looking at the state of its bedroom, it clearly had a wild night. I’d rather not be the one to rouse it.

Let’s hope it feels a little sunnier tomorrow.

The fine folks over at SILVER BULLET COMICS have pinned on a red cape, swooped down from the clouds and saved our butts from the evil of maxed out bandwidth by hosting the HorCast on their site! Now, don’t get your panties in a knot. You’ll still be able to find your favorite half hour of geeked out nonsense here, at the ‘haus, every Monday. SILVER BULLET COMICS will be the shows second home - its apartment in the city, where, at times it might throw parties or have some fun with its mistress.

Ahem…

They’ll be mirroring the audio and video files to alleviate some of the strain the show has been putting on our web-host. As an added bonus, we’re going to make an effort in the future to coordinate a portion of the shows with articles and interviews that Jonathon and his crack team of journalistic commandos are tirelessly hunting down and assembling for SILVER BULLET. This may put a cramp in our last-minute-recording style of podcasting. It might even mean that we have to start taking the show seriously.

In any case, my solution was to drag Karl and Matt out for a coffee, expecting that the conversation would eventually turn from politics, poker and women into something resembling intelligent conversation about comic books. Little did I know that it would ALL be about comic books.

This HorCast has been a long time coming. It began as a notion I had for a new project, something I’m still keeping close to the vest. These fresh ideas raised a lot of questions about the links between comic books and music and led me to begin seeking answers from others. This is a fraction of the result.

Another Day, Another Apology

I’m stuck in Glasgow without my trusty Powerbook which means at least another day before I can get the HorCast posted. Sorry about the delay. I should let all of our patient listeners know that this next podcast was recorded a week ago, Karl in Montreal and me in Welland, hundreds of kilometres away, communicating over the phone. I edited the beast down over the weekend but was unable to get my microphone operational and thus was unable to add the intro and outro. I hope to have this problem solved when I return to Edinburgh tomorrow morning. You may notice a sharp drop in the quality of the recording from previous efforts as I may have to resort to the Powerbooks built in, pinhole mic.
…sigh…
On a positive note, the long promised Music/Comics HorCast is coming along swimmingly and will debut as a two part series, complete with music from Andy Lee, Nick Craine and Kid Koala!

HorCast #5 - Horhaus TCAF Roundtable

This was a bit of a debacle. The first time that Team Horhaus ever sat together over a beverage we ended up making asses out of ourselves, giggling at transvestites, pontificating over Kalman’s posterior and generally longing for the boogie. A tiring day signing, sketching, and moping around the Toronto Comics Arts Festival really stole the intellectual might from the boys and I and made for a hell of an editing session. This is the first time I’ve had to employ the ‘BLEEP’ which, I must admit, I’m not completely satisfied with. The timbre I settled on is a little too smooth and deep - a slightly soothing tone where it should unnerve. I take solace in the notion that Team Horhaus won’t be together again soon, as it gives me ample time to seek out a proper ‘BLEEP’ sound.

I’ve opened up the comment section of the HorCast posts. Let us know how you like the shows so far and what you’d like to see in the future. We’ve got a lot of really neat stuff coming up shortly - Kid Koala, Jim Mahfood, Andy Lee, Nick Craine and others on comics and music, Paul Pope dishing dirt on famous rock bands he’s worked with, more Adventures of Superman page by page, the Toronto Comics Arts Festival roundtable, Photoshop cover art commentary, the future of digital comics and so much more!

This has been a pretty huge week for team Horhaus. We’ve started a podcast, attended a convention, printed comics and had a major release through direct market retail outlets: Adventures of Superman #640. It’s a dream come true for Karl. He really put a lot of pressure on himself to get things right for his Man of Steel debut and it seems to have panned out. It’s a great looking issue that marks the beginning of a new era for him as an artist. In this HorCast we pull apart the issue, revealing the secrets of the story and the process that put it on the page. There was a comic book convention in Montreal this past weekend. While Karl was dutifully signing issues of Majestic and Superman and drawing sketches for his fans, Matt and I retired to the greasiest spoon in the city for some grub. The somewhat peculiar food ended up taking a back seat to our conversation about comics as you’ll hear in this weeks HorCast. Matt talks a little about his strip, Ojingogo, the super hero soap-opera and what Scott McCloud really thinks about this years crop of Eisner nominated digital comics!
