Staying at Karl’s place for a few days. I did this sketch tonight while the subject was actually hard at work and making money. I thought it might be cathartic for those who are lamenting the passing of Karl’s infamous work-cam.

This is the cover to Adventures of Superman #640, which is the first issue of my run and which I had the pleasure of drawing and colouring (click on it for a larger version). The news of my 2-year contract with DC has broken over at Newsarama, so I figured it would be okay to finally post this pic.
And just for fun, you can see the shoddy cover sketch that I submitted for approval, as well as the rough pencils for the piece.

Let’s just say I was less than satisfied with the quality of freely available Superman icons for my computer desktop. And let’s also say that I had some free time on my hands, and while we’re at it, let’s say I’m NOT an anal-retentive, perfectionist nerd.
Anyway, whatever the reason, I simply had no choice but to make my own damned icon. You can see it on the left there, and it’s based on Jim Lee’s revamped logo, which is really growing on me.
AND… just in case anyone else would like to adorn their machine with it, I’ve included a zipped file containing a Macintosh version and a Windows .ico file for you Microsoft masochists ;)

The previous post reminded me of another old Stone-inspired project of mine (there have been many), the prematurely aborted Stone@Work strip.
See, Stone worked in a computer store for a while, and they made the mistake of setting up a Web Cam overlooking the counter.
Actually, the mistake was in telling me the password to access it.
I had planned to do a series of these, but it was tricky to screen-grab interesting people and I inevitably ran out of steam. I do have a small archive of useable stuff, though, so maybe I’ll whip up a couple more.

I mean it. Take this at face value. I don’t know what it is or what, exactly, compelled me to make this monstrosity, but I remember it was intended to make my pal Stone laugh at work.
Everyone should be issued a free copy of Photoshop at an early age by their local City Arts Centre or something. It should be covered by some tax or another. I don’t know how humanity got on for so long without it.

Happy New Year, everyone. I haven’t shown my face here since before the holidays, but the comment sections have been on fire. Coincidence?
I had some lingering illustration jobs to finish up (did a couple of pics for a Batman Trading Card set which I’ll post here as soon as I can), but now my head is clear and I’m jumping into work on Superman.
No script yet, but I’ve been given the go-ahead to start on my first cover, which has been at once the highlight of my career, to date, and the most daunting, crippling thing I’ve ever had to work on.
I anticipated pressure, but every line I draw is… I can’t explain it without relating it to something sexual, so just use your imagination.
Here’s a quick marker sketch I did as the first cover proposal. This idea wasn’t used (something about flag-burning…) but you can see what the process is like.

I’ll post the sketch for the final design once the cover is solicited, but it involves more action and an implied fight scene. I don’t think I could have pulled it off without inspiration.

So I guess this’ll be our token (late) Christmas post. Here goes…
I came across this pic following Christmas dinner at my dad’s, where part of the festivities this year involved my step-mother dragging out all manner of dusty, arcane photo albums. Now, some of these I could probably reproduce in blueline and painter for you by now, but others, like the one where this photo came from I’d never seen before.
In the Winter of 1996 I was working part-time here at Silver Snail Comics, trying to get my fledgling illustration career off the ground. Long story short, I made this 7 foor tall Jack Skellington for their Christmas window that year, out of PVC pipe, chicken wire, insulation foam, and a ton of black tissue papier mache. My buddy Chris helped immensly, and did a bang up job carving the head. Comics wunderkind Cameron Stewart (yeah, he worked there too…) also made a ginchy Zero that you can’t see because I’m obscuring it.
I’d often wished I’d gotten some pictures of it, and completely forgot that my Dad, actually did.
I should point out that I look nothing like this today. I actually looked nothing like this back then too. ‘This’ being a lot like like Lurch, but then you’re not supposed to be looking at me. Look at Jack.
Track of the Day: Arabian Dance - Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Additions: Freshened up the music recs, and added Brian K. Vaughan’s real site to the Reading section, because he has one now.
