Exclusive Coverage

This is the cover to Adventures of Superman #640, which is the first issue of my run and which I had the pleasure of drawing and colouring (click on it for a larger version). The news of my 2-year contract with DC has broken over at Newsarama, so I figured it would be okay to finally post this pic.
And just for fun, you can see the shoddy cover sketch that I submitted for approval, as well as the rough pencils for the piece.

Hey Karl-
The cover looks great! I love the comic-y coloring in the background. I’m curious why you’ve colored this all saturated and technicolor. You’ve always used a much more muted pallete. Is this just something you think Superman calls for? I’m looking forward to the book, glad they let you do the whole kit and kaboodle!

Thanks, Rico (nice to hear from you)!
You’re right, I usually tend toward less saturated colours, and I did a lot of tweaking to this piece before finally deciding that it was finished (or as finished as it was going to be). I kept knocking the colours down to wash them out, but ultimately I wanted to achieve a sort of Warhol-esque pop-art look, and I think Superman’s costume warrants brighter hues than I’m generally comfortable with.
It’s an ongoing experiment - we’ll see what happens next…
