The brush pen! Basically, it’s just a pen with a flexible tip (of varying size) like a brush. I bought a couple of Faber Castell brush pens to play with and really enjoyed them, but I tend to draw really quickly and abuse the tip, thus losing the fine point, so these were useless to me after only a few sketches.
This past weekend, however, I was given a hot tip about the fabled Pentel Brush Pen (see above). It’s got a more durable brush, comes in a couple of sizes, and is refillable!! I tested Forsythe’s and then ran out and bought one of my own.
Used by the likes of Craig Thompson, Cameron Stewart and Carla Speed McNeil, how can you go wrong??
Because Lyon Requested It…

I would like to take partial blame….sorta. More importantly, I would like to thank Karl and Matthew for the sketches they did for me this past TCAF weekend. I also hope to get Kalman to crank a sketch for me this summer at the Toronto Summer end. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=9815
Now THAT’S service!
whoa! hey thanks for scanning and posting those danny! you’re a champ!
You got it Danny, I’ve got a piece of bristol right here with your name on it!
We were calling around the city to see if anyone had the zebra brush pen in stock during tcaf - which they didn’t - is this available locally/hold up to the zebra?
I’ve never tried the Zebra, but I looked it up and it seems to have a slightly smaller tip, which is nice.
I bought the Pentel around the corner from TCAF, at a little art store on Bloor. I think they’re pretty easy to get a hold of, and they cost about 15 bucks, with 4-pack refills at 6/7 dollars a pop.
The Faber Castell pens are more ubiquitous, and cheaper, but also more disposable, Oh, the choices!
Holy frickin’ pricey Batman! Well that’s done for me then. Nothing like a hefty pricetag to kill idle curiosity. Back to scratching on slate with a burnt stick for me…
Uh, KarlÉit’s just a sexy pen.
