SOTD Muad’dib 5 years on

I first stumbled across Steven Gettis’ Artistic Interpretations of Literary Figures site around mid-2000. I was trapped in a poisonous business partnership and was swimming in frustration caused by a not-zippy-enough career in comics illustration.

I was tickled by Steven’s idea though, which is in a nutshell, a website where comic artists contribute portraits of either: a) their favorite author or b) their favorite hero of fiction. So I contacted Steven and proceeded to make this.

When Steven turned up out of the blue recently asking if I’d like to do another, I briefly considered contributing my favorite author Jorge Luis Borges, but ultimately couldn’t resist doing a reinterpretation of Paul Muad’dib, lovingly crafted with 5 additional years experience and (one hopes) skill.

Same time in 2010 Steve…?

NOTE: This is a digital snap of the drawing — all I was able to get since I finished it at a con. Hi-res scan to follow soon.

Hey kalman,
Just wanted to say, great illos and a wicked choice of character as well. I’ve loved the “dune” setting since I saw the film ages ago (still trying to track down the mini-series… I’m sure it’s on DVD out there somewhere.) Nice interpretations of the character. i haven’t read the novels yet, i assume you’re a fan? Once I have more time, you know how it is…

Hey Kalman,
If there ends up being a Dune comic project one day, your style would suit that; like, totally. I’d geek out so much I’d have to be sent to hospital.
