I took a break from Teen Titans: Year One to help out with this special issue of The Flash, and I was sworn to secrecy. Why?
The return of Wally West
There’s a six-page preview over at Newsarama, and the issue hits the shelves on July 18, right before the San Diego Comicon. Check it out and let me know what you think. I haven’t seen any of the other pages by Ian Churchill, Manuel Garcia and Daniel Acuna, and I didn’t even have the last two pages of the script, so count me among the many who are waiting to see Wally kick some serious ass.

The Abominable Charles Christopher was a temporary working title I had for this idea, but it ended up sticking - I think because it instantly evokes the absurdity of the character.
What is it? It’s my new webcomic, part of the Transmission X project I’m involved in with my studio-mates. We’re updating our strips once a week, and there are seven of us, so we’re hoping to have daily updates once things get properly rolling. Stay tuned!

Who is this charming fellow??
Find out this week-end at the MoCCA art show in NewYork!
I’ll be there alongside Ragni, Matt Forsythe, and the Royal Academy crew as we promote our new online comics venture and sell Ragni EPs. We’ll be at table C13, sketching and looking pretty, so come and see us!
More news to come…
Today, as I was getting out of my car, I dropped my PowerBook on the ground.
It was in its case, which is lightly padded, and I guess I wasn’t paying attention or had my hands full, or maybe it just slipped off my shoulder, but it fell. Landed on the left rear corner. And honestly, I didn’t think much of it because I’ve dropped it like that once or twice before from lesser heights. But not on asphalt.
Now it’s got a nasty dent in the corner and the aluminum case is flared out above the modem port and around the back near the power port. I feel like I’m dreaming. I’ve actually had dreams in the past where my computer has been maimed or otherwise damaged, but this time it’s for real. When I got back home I used a hammer (and a lot of towel padding) to gingerly tap the metal back into place. It’s a bit better, but still not the immaculate beauty I reared from childhood.
sigh.
The upside is that it still works perfectly. Thank Jobs for that Sudden Motion Sensor technology…
You know what day of the week it is? A couple of Facehunter warm-ups from this morning. I’m sure the top one is a dude. Seriously.

Nothin’ questionable about it! Here’s my entry…

And what’s this?! A special guest entry by Ramón Pérez! With a cat, too (he assures me the cat is also a girl…)

Grandstanding with his fancy colouring, Kalman comes in with the 11th-hour entry…

Ramon and I went to see Knocked Up tonight (it was not a date), and I’ve been thinking about it all the way home and into bed.
The short review: I loved it. Much, much better than I expected it to be.
The slightly longer review: I didn’t expect much, honestly - just some good old Apatow charm and a few laughs. I liked The 40 Year Old Virgin, but I didn’t love it, so my expectations for Knocked Up were based mostly on my fondness for Freaks and Geeks. Right off the bat I felt like I was sitting in the theatre with a bunch of old friends, as most of the cast of Apatow’s various TV shows found their way into this film somehow or another. I had to suspend my disbelief in the probability of Alison’s character (an attractive television interviewer) starting a relationship with Ben (a crude but lovable pothead slacker) rather than just deciding to raise the baby on her own, but once I cleared that mental hurdle it was smooth sailing.
Lots of unconventional storytelling choices. The outcome, as with most romantic comedies, is kind of inevitable and predictable, but the twists and turns are all very fresh, and I was constantly surprised by the way the characters interacted. Just when I was getting tense about an impending argument or plot device, the script would go in a different and refreshing direction, and I noticed several times that scenes would start and/or end in ways I wasn’t expecting. It felt kind of like the Farrelly brothers directing a Cameron Crowe film.
Recommendation: Go and see it with Ramon. He might buy you some Peanut M&Ms!
The Premise: Murphy, feeling like he can’t do as much good on the street in his signature chrome trappings (and nostalgic for his Irish heritage), dons civilian clothes and goes undercover in the seedy underbelly of Detroit. His new persona: Rob O’Cop.
Mock-up by #1 Robocop super-fan Cameron Stewart:
I’m back from the Paradise Toronto Con and I’m exhausted - not so much from the show, but from staying out late and drinking. I think I may have set a personal record for ‘least amount of time ever spent at my table’, and I apologize to anyone who came by looking for me only to find a lonely stack of books and an empty chair. While I was there, though, I took part in a super-sized jam piece with the studio crew. We auctioned it off at the end of the show, and it was a lot of fun. So much fun, I think, that we’re going to do some more and put them up for sale online! Here’s a photo for posterity. From left to right, back row: me, Cameron, Mike Cho (looking characteristically morose), and Scott Hepburn, and up front: Andy B., Brian McLachlan, Ramon, and completing the Butternut duo in the extreme foreground, Rob Coughler!
And here’s the finished Jam piece. Click on it for a larger version.
Can anyone identify every character on the page? Extra points if you can match the drawing with the artist! HINT…. there’s a sketch in there by a mystery guest who does not appear in the photo.Good luck!
I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire right now, with Teen Titans: Year One, an upcoming Wildstorm miniseries and a bunch of covers for DC, but the project nearest to my heart is the original graphic novel I went to Newfoundland to research last summer. It’s an east-coast ghost story, tentatively titled ‘The Mummers‘. I’ve got a notebook full of ideas and sketches and not enough time to do anything about it.
Gotta make time, I guess…
Here are a couple of sketches from my moleskine:
