This image was shown in San Diego last week, so I’m finally allowed to put some Teen Titans: Year One art up here!
The cover (as well as the interiors) are coloured by the incredible Stephane Peru, and it’s not hype or exaggeration to say that the stuff inside looks even better than this. I’m three issues into the series and extremely proud of it, so I can’t wait until Teen Titans fans get a look at it.

This next one is the first drawing I did of the team, just trying to nail down the character designs. Things change as you progress on a book, so the kids all look a little different now, but I still really like this piece. It probably won’t be used for anything, so I’m posting it here.
Here’s a question:
Is the yellow portion of Kid Flash’s costume supposed to come all the way down like a bodysuit? Or does it end in a ‘V’ at his waist? I was sure that it was the former after looking through DC’s Showcase reprints, but after reading some comments about this image from message boards I’m no longer certain. If I’ve got it wrong, please tell me and I’ll fix it.
Thanks, everyone!

Back from San Diego, that is! It was a week of beach-going and gin-drinking, but I made it back in one piece. I didn’t really spend much time at the show itself (apologies to anyone who was looking for me, but DC didn’t really ask me to do anything there, so I was mostly wandering the show floor) but I saw most of my favourite people at the various parties and drink-ups each night.
Amy Wolfram snapped this picture of me, which was difficult since Pikachu was constantly on the move and appeared drunk and overworked.

Other highlights include:
- Scott getting a jellyfish in the face
- Our Wednesday night BBQ party
- All the motorcycles
- Two minutes of conversation with Greg Rucka (I miss you, Greg)
- Rodolphe Guenoden’s sketchbooks
- A brief chat with Mike Mignola
- Mike Cho’s teriyaki story
- Our tour of DreamWorks animation (and their cafeteria)
- Trying out Kwanza’s iPhone
The list goes on.
Now hopefully I can get some work done before TCAF and the Hobbystar convention…

Got a stack of comps from SPIN magazine today, so I’m going to assume it’s okay to post this illustration. I was asked to illustrate a review of Florida punk icons Against Me!’s latest album New Wave. I’d never heard of them, but damn they were a lot of fun to draw.

See? I told you everything would change. Here I am late on a Friday sharing more art with you.
Just acquired a stack of awesome new music — I have to confess I’m really excited about the recent convergance of indie rock and electronic music. I guess the most visible example of this is UK media darling The Klaxons, but I’m discovering they’re just the tip of the iceberg. I lost my mind earlier this week to a Klaxons remix by Crystal Castles (who are apparently from around here in Toronto) and after some hunting discovered that the Crystal Castles have built their sound around one of my favorite things ever — 8-bit videogame music. Scoff if you want, but in a few months all the hipsters will be pretending they used to tape record their segas like I actually did. I’ve loved that sound since I was a kid, and now, finally after nearly 15 years I’ve been validated.

So I’ve just finished uploading a massive art-backlog. I’ve been neglecting you all, and now, at last, that’s been remedied. Check out my gallery, particularly the covers section for new stuff.
Some hilights: The second half of my run of ION covers, my pin-up from the Official Handbook of the Invincible Universe Vol 1, and a Thom Yorke Illo from the January Issue of SPIN magazine.
More soon? Hell yes, there’s still a mountain of work I can’t post yet, never mind the stuff I’m drawing right now.
I’ll be better from here on in, you’ll see.

Back again, with some birthday wishes for our very own Matthew Forsythe! Everyone in the studio is pretty busy gearing up for San Diego, so the girl factor might be kind of light today…

This just showed up in my mailbox. I’ve known Jay for years, but I don’t think he’s ever e-mailed me before now. It’s so heart-warming to know that I have friends like this. Here’s to you, Jay!

I know I’ll probably get flamed into oblivion for this, but could someone please explain to me the appeal of Halo?
I’ve played a bit of it - maybe an hour of the single-player game and a half-hour of multiplayer, but I fail to see how it’s anything more than a mundane first-person shooter, and an ugly one at that. The designs for the characters are clunky and unimaginative (how is a blandly-armoured guy with a windshield on his face an enduring and compelling character?) and the enemies are standard alien video game fare. Sure, there are vehicles you can climb into, but so what? And I’m told the controls are great, but I come from a PC background using a mouse and keyboard, so the crappy analog controls of the XBOX don’t feel smooth or responsive at all. But I guess that’s not even a valid gripe since I played some of it on my mac using a mouse and keyboard and it was still boring.
By the way, before I’m accused of hating the FPS genre I’d like to point out that I’ve played countless hours of Rainbow Six, Half-Life and others, so I’m no stranger to the first-person shooter.
Halo isn’t just a popular game, it’s a bona fide system-seller. It’s almost single-handedly responsible for the success of the original XBOX, and the second sequel is expected to do the same for the XBOX 360. Why?
Seriously, someone please tell me, because I just don’t get it.
