The ‘Word on the Street‘ festival took over Queen’s Park in Toronto today, and I was on a panel about ‘The Secret of Breaking Into Comics’ with Cameron and Stuart Immonen! Meeting Stuart was great - I’ve been a big fan of his work for a long time now. And to make top it off, he was born in my home town of Welland, Ontario!
Yay, Welland! I love Welland when I don’t have to live there!
Anyway, the panel was good, even if none of us have any real secrets of breaking into comics. I guess my secret is to go back to 1993 and get work with a smaller company who doesn’t realize that you’re young and you suck. Hone your craft while they’re paying you, develop your skills for several years, then come back to the present and show your awesome samples to Marvel and DC.
That’s what I did (minus the time travel part)!
Good luck!

Based on a number of excellent recommendations, I’ve gone out and purchased a bunch of cheap, used Gamecube games! I’ll review them as I play through them all (this may take quite a while because I have lots of work to do), but here’s the rundown:
1. Super Mario Sunshine: As a Mario fan, I’m excited about this. I know it’s no Mario 64, but it still looks like good, well-designed fun.
2. Metroid Prime: I’m holding off on the new Metroid for the Wii so I can play through these chronologically.
3. Eternal Darkness: Because the readers were unanimous in its awesomeness! Can’t wait.
4. Robotech: Okay, this was an impulse buy. It was 6 bucks and I was a huge Robotech fan, so even if the game is a piece of shit, I can’t really lose.
Thanks to all for the recommendations - feel free to keep ‘em coming. Reviews to come soon!

In case anyone is interested (and who wouldn’t be?) the interview I did for Wizard Magazine is online. It’s all about webcomics and how Transmission-X is approaching the medium. Doing comics for the web versus print requires a whole different mindset and approach, and it’s something I’m learning as I go.
Thanks to Brian Warmoth for a great conversation!
See what you think…

I couldn’t help myself…

A man is hit in the head three times, scratched up, and left bleeding. All while he was just walking down the street. He says, it was an owl that attacked him.
There’s a lot of wildlife in the area, and people are used to it. But John Patterson says, he never expected some of the wildlife to attack him.
Hollywood Park is off the beaten path. It’s serene, peaceful, and quiet. So, as the sun went down, John went out to get some exercise.
“I was walking right along here, and it hit me in the back of the head, and I thought I hit a tree limb,” John said.
He looked around, and there was no tree limb.
Then, it hit John a second time. He said he thought it was a prank, or that something was after him.
John jogged another 50 yards and it happened a third time.
“It hit me again in the back of the head,” John said. “This time I could see it, and it flew by and it had a pretty nice wing span.”
John finally got his answer. An owl was what kept hitting him, with a sharp beak and dangerous claws. John’s head was bleeding.
“The owl kept screeching at me,” John said. “It wouldn’t leave, so it was like an attack owl or something.”
Word spread in the close-knit neighborhood, and now John’s taking some ribbing.
“My nephews are calling me Uncle Hootie,” John said. “They call me on the phone, ‘who, who, who.’ ‘John, how are you who, who doing.’”
John says he can laugh about it now, but he was really worried about his eyes. He’s also taking a different route on his walk now.
Hollywood Park Police say this is the first owl attack they can remember.

Another Wednesday, another episode of ‘The Abominable Charles Christopher‘!
This week… some of the aftermath of Vivol’s party, and a relationship squabble. It’s like a soap opera in the Cedar Forest!

So while I haven’t had much in the way of free time lately, I have managed to play a few video games. This is mostly done in the hour or two between when I get home from work and when I crawl into bed. Having such limitations forces me to be pretty choosy about what I play, so I’ve been reading more reviews and message boards rather than trying things cold. Here’s what I’ve been playing:
- Zelda (Twilight Princess AND Wind Waker. I blogged about these already.)
- Wii Sports (because it’s always fun, especially with my cousins)
- Pokémon Pearl (on the DS. I’m still playing this, and it’s taking forever but I love it. Mostly.)
- God of War (PS2. Finished it and was very satisfied.)
- Resident Evil 4 (on the Wii. This is a re-release of the GameCube version with Wii controls. It’s really good. I’m halfway through it.)
- Luigi’s Mansion (Just bought this GameCube game for 12 bucks because it looked like fun. So far, it is.)
Now, because I never owned a GameCube, I missed out on some classic Nintendo games, but the Wii has given me the opportunity to pick them up cheap and play through them. Zelda was a priority, and Luigi’s Mansion was an impulse buy, but I’m putting out a call to all horhaus readers to let me know what I should be playing! For example, is it advantageous to play the Metroid Prime games before I jump into the new one for the Wii? What about more Pokémon stuff? Did I miss anything good? And the big question: Super Mario Sunshine: worthwhile entry in the Mario franchise, or piece of shit? The internet is divided on this touchy subject.
I own a Nintedo Wii, a DS, and a PS2. I have no immediate plans to buy an XBox or a Playstation 3, so save those recommendations for later, please.
Have at it!

It’s already been a week?
I’ve been so busy with conventions, Labour Day, etc. that I haven’t had time to post much lately (I’ll try to get a new Girl Friday sketch up here this week) but at least The Abominable Charles Christopher is back, and still on schedule!
He’s such a trooper.
