Game On

So while I haven’t had much in the way of free time lately, I have managed to play a few video games. This is mostly done in the hour or two between when I get home from work and when I crawl into bed. Having such limitations forces me to be pretty choosy about what I play, so I’ve been reading more reviews and message boards rather than trying things cold. Here’s what I’ve been playing:

- Zelda (Twilight Princess AND Wind Waker. I blogged about these already.)

- Wii Sports (because it’s always fun, especially with my cousins)

- Pokémon Pearl (on the DS. I’m still playing this, and it’s taking forever but I love it. Mostly.)

- God of War (PS2. Finished it and was very satisfied.)

- Resident Evil 4 (on the Wii. This is a re-release of the GameCube version with Wii controls. It’s really good. I’m halfway through it.)

- Luigi’s Mansion (Just bought this GameCube game for 12 bucks because it looked like fun. So far, it is.)

Now, because I never owned a GameCube, I missed out on some classic Nintendo games, but the Wii has given me the opportunity to pick them up cheap and play through them. Zelda was a priority, and Luigi’s Mansion was an impulse buy, but I’m putting out a call to all horhaus readers to let me know what I should be playing! For example, is it advantageous to play the Metroid Prime games before I jump into the new one for the Wii? What about more Pokémon stuff? Did I miss anything good? And the big question: Super Mario Sunshine: worthwhile entry in the Mario franchise, or piece of shit? The internet is divided on this touchy subject.

I own a Nintedo Wii, a DS, and a PS2. I have no immediate plans to buy an XBox or a Playstation 3, so save those recommendations for later, please.

Have at it!

If you want a freaky game for Halloween time, grab Eternal Darkness. This title will mess with your head, but in a good way!

Thanks Louie! I’ll check it out - looks creepy.

Eternal Darkness is definitely great.
Animal Crossing and Chibi-Robo are also a lot of fun.
Wario Ware on the Wii (or the Gamecube version) is a ridiculous good time if you’ve got a couple people handy.
Mario Sunshine is definitely worth playing. I’d say parts of it are unnecessarily difficult, but for the most part it’s just pretty fun.
Playing Primes 1 and 2 aren’t required by any means before playing 3, but playing them would give you a little heads up on what the style of play for 3 is like, and of course there’ll be some questions answered and things you’d notice from the other games. Easter egg-y. Does that make sense?

Man, as soon as I saw the call for Gamecube reccomendations my brain screamed “Eternal Darkness!”. Just a gorgeous game with some truly unique touches. Glad to see it getting some love here.

Mario Sunshine was a huge let down after Mario 64. Not a piece of shit, but not really a worthy entry in the franchise for me - definitely skippable.

I would disagree with the ratings above for Sunshine. I really, liked it. It isn’t as ground braking as mario 64 but it had some fantastic levels, the retro levels were the best. I think the best way to think about it is that the bar is so high with mario that ok it isn’t the best Mario game ever but it is a lot better than practically every other game of that genre.

Viewtifull joe is good, As is Wind Waker.

On the DS the new Super Mario is fantastic. Definately worth buying.

See what I mean about divided?
You know what, I’m just gonna’ buy Mario Sunshine. I’m obviously just looking for an excuse, and I love Mario. I played through the new DS game and it was great.
And it looks like everyone agrees that Eternal Darkness is the bomb.

I have throw my vote in for Eternal Darkness as well. That was my first impulse when I saw the posting. Its just the best. After Viewtiful joe, Killer 7 is next on my list for great Capcom GCN games, followed by the beautifully rendered Resident Evil 1 remake. Starfox Adventures was totally irrelevant to the Starfox franchise, but super-fun to play. The Wind Waker, although you may be burned out by playing Twilight Princess (read: same exact gameplay), is great, as well as Smash Bros and the Metroid Prime series. Then pick up FF X and XII and say goodbye to your career becaus they are time consuming but ultimately satisfying.

Killer 7 definitely.
But really, the only game you need to ever play is Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, then pick up a PS2 slim and play MGS2: Sons of Libertad and MGS3: Snake Eater.
Serisouly, IMHO these are the greatest games created ever since the 32 bit era.
MGS4: Guns of the Patriots is the only reason I’m not getting an xbox 360 and missing out on all the Halo 3 hub bub.

  Karl wrote @ September 25th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Hey Arthur!
Isn’t MGS: Twin Snakes just a remake of the original PS1 game?
I’ve played through Metal Gears 1 & 2, but never got around to playing 3 - maybe I’ll pick it up one day for my PS2.

And Snake is a playable character in the new Smash Bros. game for the Wii ! Wheeee!

arthur dela cruz wrote @ September 27th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Yeah, Twin Snakes is a remake, with all new cut scenes directed by a Japanese film maker.

MGS:3 is so good. And actually answers some lingering questions about the past.

Do yourself a favor and pick up Okami on the PS2. It’s an overlooked GEM that easily stacks up there with the Zelda games. Seriously, it’s one of my top 10 games ever.
