Cosmo Girl
Every moment of every day, everywhere we go, we're being bombarded by radio signals, wireless transmissions, radiation, microwaves, and God knows how many other forms of airborne communication.
Now imagine that you could see all of those invasive waves. Ploughing through you, bouncing off of your head, filling your home and your world with a never-ending distraction of useless information.
That's pretty much how I feel about American Pop Culture.
I disconnected my television several months ago and haven't looked back, but since the publication of my recent Superman work, reminders of the great beast have crept in through my closely-guarded e-mail inbox in the form of reviews. Specifically troubling is the oft-expressed criticism of Lois Lane's weight.
Now, this is nothing new to me. I read the same comments about my depiction of Theresa Cassidy in the Deadpool issue I did a few years back, and it's an inevitable response (occasionally positive, I should add) to many of my drawings of women.
Why is this even an issue? Anyone with half a brain can see that none of these characters are fat, or even unhealthy-looking. Is our society so snowed by the faux-idealism of the anorexic magazine cover girl that this is considered fat?
I can't do much about talentless musicians, hollywood idolatry, or entertainment tabloid television, but in my little corner of the universe I can at least put something on the shelves that tries not to make people feel worse about themselves or others.
The above sketch of the Venus of Willendorf is dedicated to Mimi, who reminded me this morning, in the most flattering way, of what a fucked up world we live in. Or, rather, what a fucked up time...
Fucked up time is right, I still believe there is so much beauty in this world...the world where american pop culture doesn't exist ...the real world!
I'm never good at writing so i don't want to embarrass myself, but I think she's beautiful, because your representation of her is honest. I love her "thickness" it's so sexy and a bit raw, but you still see softness in her and there's a warmth ...
Trini men would love her I could tell you that!! :)
